Nioh 3 Walkthrough Part 1: Mastering The Veiled Shore

The legend returns. In Nioh 3, Team Ninja has introduced a terrifying level of mechanical depth. It’s 1582, and the aftermath of the Honno-ji Incident has unleashed a tide of Yokai that feed on the desperation of a fractured Japan. To survive the first mission, "Shadows of the Tide," you must unlearn your habits from Nioh 2 and adapt to the 2026 combat meta.

Julian Blackwood: "The data is clear: 70% of players quit in the first three hours because they treat Nioh 3 like a hack-and-slash. It’s not. It’s a rhythmic survival sim. You don't fight the enemy; you fight the rhythm."

1. The Foundation: Core Stat Optimization

Before you even swing a blade, you must understand the new Spirit Resonance stat. This determines how efficiently your weapon interacts with the environmental Ki of the battlefield.

The Damage Output Variable ($D_v$):
$$D_v = (\text{Weapon Attack} \times \text{Scaling Factor}) + (\text{Resonance Level} \times 1.5)$$

Starting Build Recommendation

Focus Primary Stats Recommended Weapon
The Tank Constitution & Stamina Great Odachi
The Ninja Dexterity & Skill Kusarigama
The Mage Magic & Resonance Switchglaive II

2. New Mechanic: Spirit Resonance Flow

Natalie Weaver: "In Nioh 3, the environment is alive. When you perform a Perfect Ki Pulse, you now trigger 'Spirit Flow.' This temporarily coats your weapon in the element of the terrain (Water on the Shore, Fire in the Ruins). Use this to your advantage!"

Pro-Tip: The "Flux II" Shortcut

Unlock Flux II as early as possible. In the 2026 build, switching stances twice during a Ki Pulse restores 30% more Ki than in previous games. This allows for near-infinite combos if timed with Spirit Flow.

3. Boss Strategy: The Drowned Centipede (Mission 1)

This is the first major wall. The Drowned Centipede is fast, inflicts Waterblight (which slows Ki recovery), and has a devastating grab attack.

The Phase Breakdown

  • Phase 1 (100% - 60% HP): He stays in the water. Do not follow him. Bait his lunging strike, dodge to his left, and punish his tail.
  • Phase 2 (60% - 0% HP): He crawls onto the land. He becomes much more aggressive. Use your Burst Counter (R2 + Circle) when he flashes red to deplete his Ki bar.
Ki Depletion Goal:
$$\text{Target Ki} < (\text{Player Attack} \times \text{Stance Multiplier})$$

4. Summary: Survival Checklist

  • Master the Ki Pulse before the first boss.
  • Invest at least 5 points into Constitution regardless of your build.
  • Collect all 5 Kodama in the Veiled Shore to unlock an extra Elixir.
