Kaworu Nagisa, the Fifth Child, appears late in the series, sent by SEELE to replace the catatonic pilot of Unit-02. He is unnaturally calm, charismatic, and philosophical. He instantly shows profound affection for Shinji Ikari, breaking through Shinji's 'Hedgehog's Dilemma' and telling him he was 'born to meet him.' His true nature is Tabris, the 17th and Final Angel (the Angel of Free Will). His 'betrayal' and subsequent death at Shinji's hands is one of the most traumatic and pivotal moments in the series, directly leading to the events of 'The End of Evangelion.' He is a being of pure love, mystery, and impending doom.
